Sideshow's Silver Screen Edition Monsters
Sideshow Collectibles Inc., known for their high-quality items devoted to pop culture subjects, released a small series of limited-edition Silver Screen figures in 2007 devoted to a handful of classic movie monsters in their original black and white (greyscale) versions. The subjects covered included the Boris Karloff Frankenstein's Monster, Bela Lugosi's Dracula, Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera and London After Midnight monster, and Lon Chaney Jr's Wolfman. The figures stood between 16-1/2" and 20" tall, or 1/4 scale.
As part of the company's Premium Format line of figures, the Silver Screen Editions were very carefully sculpted renditions of not only the characters, but also the actors beneath the makeup of each. Details were accurate according to the versions shown in the respective films.
The figures were poseable, which allows them to be called 'figures' and not 'statues'; but the range of movement in each was particularly limited. The packaging for each example was often the only guide an owner had to the flexibility allowed.
Each figure was sculpted of 'polystone' and was dressed in fabric costume. Each stood on a small themed base appropriate to the character.
This series of figures was released in greyscale to reproduce the black and white film format in which the characters first appeared.
Each figure originally retailed for over $200, and was released in quantities of 300 or less. They are now sold out.
