Dark Shadows Paperback Novelizations

The Dark Shadows series of novels was published between December 1966 and March 1972, for a total of 33 installments. They were all written by gothic-fiction writer Dan Ross, under the pen name of his wife, Marilyn Ross.

The storylines within the novels did not quite follow the continuity of the onscreen TV show; after all, when he began writing them, Ross had only a 'series bible' and maybe a script or two to guide him. Characters and situations (such as a long-lost Collins cousin) unfolded within the books that were never touched in the TV series, and vice-versa. Instead, the stories within the books form a sort of alternate-universe, 'parallel' world compared to the canon episodes (much like the parallel worlds the onscreen version often showed).

The first few novels focused on the character of Vickie Winters, since she had been introduced from the very beginning as the main protagonist. When Barnabas appeared and became popular, the focus of the books shifted to him, and a little later the character of Quentin Collins would enjoy the spotlight.

Several first printings of the early books featured painted artwork; later editions would all feature posed photographs taken on set.
